Part 12: Fisheries science

Broken link?
New link?

Part index This section will ultimately contain links to information on a variety of related fisheries disciplines. Currently it contains information only on fisheries science. We are currently looking for assistance in building up a new section for fisheries economics. The links for fisheries science are intended to connect non-scientists with information that is easily digestible. For more detailed and more specialized sites therefore, try one of the other links pages at the bottom of this page.

Marine science organizations

International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)
The ICES site contains a lot of information about the Council and it's work, including numerous recent reports of the various Committees and multitudinous Working Groups (all in pdf format). The links below are to some of the more useful material from an international fisheries perspective:

General information on ICES and its member countries

General ICES documents

ICES Standing Scientific Committees and related Working Groups
The following pages give information on the Standing Committees, copies of recent reports (in pdf format) and links to the various related Working Groups, for which there is also a certain amount of basic information (terms of reference, etc.) and, in some cases, copies of recent reports:

Fisheries Technology
Oceanography
Resource Management
Marine Habitat
Mariculture
Living Resources
Baltic

Advisory Committee on Fishery Management

ACFM Report 1999 - Contents
Working Groups  (including some reports)
Information on ICES stocks

Advisory Committee on the Marine Environment (ACME)
Basic information only on the Committee.

North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES)

Recently revised and improved website, containing (among other things) an overview of the organization; a news page; and information on committee and working group meetings and Annual Meetings.

International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM)

Contains an overview of the Commission and information on CIESM activities, but there are no documents available on-line. (Publications can be ordered on-line, however).

General links

Fishbase
Fishbase is a massive information database on fisheries, containing information on virtually all known fish species. The database lists common and scientific names of fish, provides various biographical information and references. A truly excellent resource.

Fish Name Dictionary
A very useful multilingual (including English and Latin) dictionary of over 1600 fish and marine mammal names, maintained by Dr Gunners Jonssonar of the Marine Research Institute in Iceland.

Catalogue of the Species of Fishes
Extensive scientific catalogue containing biological information on fish species.

DFO (Canada): Underwater World
A selection of leaflets from the DFO's "Underwater World" series, available on-line. Following the originals, each covers one of Canada's resource species, divided into four categories two of which are relevant to international fisheries (the Atlantic region and the Pacific region categories). In addition to scientific/biological information, the leaflets also contain information on the fishery and management, although many are now dated.

ECNASAP (Northwest Atlantic) Groundfish Atlas
As the name suggests, this is an atlas, compiled under the East Coast of North America Strategic Assessment Project, comprising 99 maps available in pdf format or as zipped gifs.

Notes on the Dynamics of Fish Populations
A complete textbook of marine fisheries dynamics, readable on the Web, prepared by Gunnar Stefánsson of the Marine Research Institute, Reykjavik, Iceland. This is a more technical document than the other sites on this page.
