Links to specific items on these pages are contained on later pages. What follows is an overview of the principal sections:

FAO Home Page

FAO Fisheries Department

The FAO Fisheries pages contains a lot of useful information relating to international fisheries law. It is not always the easiest site to navigate, but there is a well set-out Site Map. Some of the more useful parts (from a legal/management perspective) are described below, but this is only a small part of what is available in total. Further links to the FAO site are contained on later pages according to particular issues.

bullet International Agreements
This section contains the texts of FAO-connected international agreements and instruments, such as the 1999 Rome Declaration on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, and a link to the useful directory of Multilateral treaties deposited with the Director-General of FAO. There is a separate page for the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and Compliance Agreement (see further on these Part 2).
bullet Committee on Fisheries (COFI)
Information on COFI and its Twenty-Third Session (February 1999), including the Report of the Session and the Meeting documents of the Session. Similar information is available for the 22nd session (March 1997).
bullet Other meetings
Basic information (dates, agendas, etc.) on the meetings of past and forthcoming meetings of FAO and its regional fisheries bodies is available from this page. The reports of meetings and other documents are reproduced for some regional bodies (for details, see International Organizations). On a separate page, there is also a section on FAO Consultations, providing reports and other documentation from some recent FAO technical consultations.
bullet Regional Bodies
This section of the FAO site consists of basic information on the FAO's regional bodies, together with on-line reproductions of recent meeting reports and documents for a small selection (see next part for further information).
bullet Management
Links to a number of useful items, most of which are reproduced elsewhere in this Pathfinder.
bullet Resources
Selection of information on world fisheries resources, including links to a number of FAO Fisheries Circulars on fisheries and aquaculture. There is also a link to FAO's Species Identification and Data Program, which consists of a world map, divided into FAO Fishing Areas, leading to a basic overview of each region (major species, major fishing countries, status of resources, etc.) accessible by clicking on the relevant part of the map.
bullet Production
Various information on recent and projected world fish and aquaculture production. Includes Summary Tables of Fishery Statistics and various other material.
bullet Trade
Various information on fisheries trade. See Part 8/3 for further details
bullet Environment
bullet Socio-Economics
bullet Statistics
bullet Fishery Country Profiles
The FAO's Fishery Country Profiles are useful summaries of recent activities and trends in fisheries and aquaculture for a particular country and include demographic, economic and fishery data, as well as a description on the relevant country's fishing industry and activities. Printed versions of the Profiles exist for over 140 countries and these are now gradually being made available on-line. A large number are already available: links to individual countries are provided on Part 10 of this Pathfinder.
