The 54th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission

Analysis of Selected Issues

The 54th Annual Meeting of the IWC took place from 20 to 24 May 2002 in Shimonoseki, Japan. These meetings are usually controversial affairs, although this year's proved to be more controversial than usual, largely because of the failure to reach agreement on certain aboriginal subsistence quotas. This series of reports, prepared by the IFB Editorial Team, discusses four of the main issues at this year's meeting: Icelandic membership, commercial whaling and the RMS, whale sanctuaries and aboriginal subsistence whaling.

Icelandic Membership (Chris Hedley)

Commercial Whaling and the RMS (Richard Caddell)

Whale Sanctuaries (Manel Wanigasekera)

Aboriginal Whaling (Chris Hedley)
